Did you know that the Lord will speak to you in everyday, ordinary circumstances? As I'm sitting and chatting with the ladies about bird poop, God spoke to me. Apparently the birds like to poop on all the porches on Kelly's street. We were all laughing but also scheming on how to keep them from doing it. Kelly has a bird feeder in her backyard that brings the birds, and she started talking about the sparrows. And Gretchen chimed in so profoundly, "They are pigs!!"
Now I don't know much about birds, so I certainly don't know anything about sparrows. But I do know that the Lord speaks about them in Scripture. Her words hit me like a ton of bricks. Let me show you why.
Psalm 84:1-3 says:
How lovely is your dwelling place,
O Lord of hosts!
My soul longs, yes, faints
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and flesh sing for joy
to the living God.
Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O Lord of hosts,
my King and my God.
Matthew 10:29-31
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
Matthew 6:25-34
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
So do you see? The sparrows are pigs!!! They eat so much food and they come back for more. How cool is that? To see that the Lord takes care of the sparrows and the birds of the air, and to know that we are much more valuable than they are.
Yes, God speaks to us...
just listen.
