Genesis 8:20-22

Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.

“As long as the earth endures,

seedtime and harvest,

cold and heat,

summer and winter,

day and night

will never cease.”

Unclean vs. clean:  The clean animals are the animals that God allows them to eat, and the unclean animals cannot be eaten i.e. dirty.

Do you find it peculiar that God says, "even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood."
If God destroyed all the evil in the world, why would he say this?  Well because He destroyed all the wicked men at the time, but he did not destroy sin within man's heart.  We are all born into sin, including Noah.  But Noah found favor with God through faith, and Noah offered sacrifices to God for his sins.  In fact, this is the first thing Noah does when he gets off the boat!  He could have started work on building his city, but He chose God first.  Would you say that your child is a sinner or innocent?  You hear parents often say about their young child, "Oh he's so rotten" or "She's a mess."  It's the truth, even though they are saying it in a sweet voice. :)  Children are born into sin.  Every person is born in need of saving from sin and death.

What a beautiful promise that the Lord makes.  He will never again destroy all living creatures by the way of the flood again, and as long as the earth remains then God promises to make the seasons run.  Here's what we see God promise:
  •      He will not curse the ground again as He had down.
  •      He will never destroy mankind by the way of the flood again
  •      He will cause the seasons and nights and days to run their course as long as the earth remains.
God is not saying that he will never destroy the earth.  Actually in Matthew 24:35 Jesus says, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away."  So, God promises never to flood the earth again.  However, God will destroy the heavens and the earth, and He will create a new heaven and new earth.  In fact, the Lord is going to one day destroy it by fire.  See 2 Peter 3:11.
Everyone has faith in something, but some put their faith in the wrong thing.  Pastor Kenneth says atheists have a lot of faith to believe that all of this came from nothing.  People who live to save the earth have their own religion worshipping creation rather than the Creator Himself.  Romans 1:25 says, "They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen." All of you recyclers out there, I commend you for being good stewards (we recycle too), but don't put your hope in the earth.

Have you noticed that every day and every night, the sun always rises and sets as promised by God here in Scripture.  We will continue to see promises throughout Scripture and continue to see that God is always faithful and true. He can be trusted!
Next week: We will study Genesis 9.  We will look at the God's commands about eating the animals and about multiplying to fill the earth.
I will answer on the next lesson.
Correction from last week:  I said that I would choose God every time under the "Implement" block.  Man I wish I chose God every time!  My desire is to choose God in every situation, but as you know we all fall short and are sinners.  I meant to say that it is my desire to choose God no matter the season :)  I hope you guys read it that way and could see my heart.  I re-read this portion to Matt because it was a helpful study when we were dealing with a business deal that fell through.  My stomach turned when I heard the way that could have been taken by you.  Please feel free to ask questions about anything I say!  Iron sharpens Iron!!!
