Revelation 3:14-22 | The Lukewarm Christian

Jesus says, "I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth" (vs. 15,16).

The Lord is speaking to the churches that don't stand with conviction, passion and zeal. These are the people that create their own idea of who Jesus is. Therefore, they have one foot in and one foot out. I have discovered that "lukewarm Christians" are those who base their entire idea of who Jesus is, off of a few verses that suit them. The most common deception is the idea that we don't have to DO anything for Christ. We can't work for it, so don't. You see this has truth, in that salvation is a gift and it is not earned (Eph. 2:8-9). However, this verse does not stand alone as if to imply that we shouldn’t do good works (James 2:14). Unfortunately, 'Lukewarm Christians' don't see the fullness of this truth found in other passages.

Lukewarm Christians deny striving for holiness. It's a life without conviction or repentance. They are basically saying, "We can do whatever we want as long as we believe in Jesus. We will go to heaven, and God forgives us no matter what. In fact, I don't really need forgiveness, because I can do whatever I want because of my freedom in Jesus. The more I sin, the more grace I receive." Paul specifically deals with these deceptions in his letters to the churches. Again, there is truth in here, but a little bit of lie contaminates the whole thing. This is why we need to consistently be reading our Bibles. It's easy to go along with these ideas because they are self-gratifying and bear some truth! Recall how Satan tried to deceive Jesus. Satan spoke truth to Jesus, but out of context or without the fullness of the truth. This is how the enemy deceives us, by putting partial truth in front of us that looks and feels good.

If you were cold, then you would at least be honest and not hypocritical. Even though being cold is not living in truth, it is much likelier that salvation will be fully received in honesty and sincerity. Therefore, it's easier to go from cold to hot, than lukewarm to hot. 'Lukewarm Christians' live their lives pleasing people rather than pleasing God. It's a life of little to no conviction. It's sad to see how this kind of living does appeal to the masses, because it spits on the justice of God. God is mercy, but He is also justice. Jesus tells us to take every thought before Him. I do not want to trust my own soul to interpret how to live for Jesus. I want to listen to the one who knows all things, created all things and is pure truth.

Another aspect of the 'lukewarm Christian' is the stance that we are NEVER to judge a person in any circumstance whatsoever. Again, this idea stands on one verse, throwing out all others that regard to judging. The problem with this, again is taking one Scripture and running with it alone and also taking it out of the context of the passage. You might as well not even claim Christ, because your stance is that truth is relative. It's saying 'what is true for me, may not be true for you. Therefore, I have no right to judge you for it.' It is true that we are not to judge people that do not claim to be a follower of Jesus. But it is boldly clear that we are required to hold our own brothers and sisters accountable.

Jesus continues, “You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked (vs. 17).

Jesus sees the ‘lukewarm Christian/church’ different than they see themselves. Actually, it’s not just different, it’s completely opposite. Their blindness doesn’t allow them to see the truth about themselves. All the while they seemingly have it all together, they are actually in a wretched and pitiful state. Regardless of what physical wealth says about a person or church, it’s the nature of the soul that tells the truth. Matthew Henry caught my attention in his theory, “Perhaps they were well provided for as to their bodies, and this made them overlook the necessities of their souls. Or they thought themselves well-furnished in their souls: they had learning, and they took it for religion; they had gifts, and they took them for grace; they had wit, and they took it for true wisdom; they had ordinances, and they took up with them instead of the God of ordinances.” You see the devil will mimic the things of God and in turn deceive man. Paul warns the church of Corinth, “…for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve” (2 Cor. 11:14-15).

Please brothers and sisters, keep your eyes and ears open to the voice of Holy Spirit, and consistently seek the Scriptures for truth, in order not to be deceived as well. My advice is to always go to the context of every verse. If Holy Spirit gives me a Scripture, I always go to the Word and read it within its context. If I see a cool verse posted on Facebook, I go to the fullness of the passage to make sure I am applying it correctly when sharing. Also, be sure to consider the Scriptures within the fullness of the Bible, aligned with the character of God and understand it within which it was written. Also, many times I will go back to my concordance to find the deeper meaning of the word in its original language. Unfortunately, English does not always convey the fullness of many Hebrew and Greek words. For example, there are four different Greek words for “love”. When reading the Bible in English, they are always translated into our same word “love”, but each of the four have deeper separate meanings than simply “love.” Please don’t be intimidated by this, because ultimately God Himself is who opens our hearts to understanding. That’s why it’s always good to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give you understanding before you read or listen to a sermon. I can always tell whether I’m in tune with God when I write. I have many posts still sitting in my “drafts” folder, and I guarantee that I did not pray before writing the majority of them.

“I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see” (vs. 18).

In Jesus’ way of grace, He identifies and counsels them towards the truth and healing. However, it’s one thing to acknowledge when Jesus tells you the truth, but it’s another to receive the counsel and act on it. He calls them beyond simply confessing. Jesus urges them to “buy” from Him. If they are poor then how do they buy? Recall Isaiah 55:1“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.” Jesus is invoking them into action. In other words, He is telling them to “trade” their pitiful, poor state in for true kingdom wealth. 1 Peter 1:6,7 further explains what Jesus means by gold that has been refined in fire. The process of refining the church is through testing and trials. The gold is the genuine faith that is produced through this kind of seasonal suffering. Genuine faith is true kingdom wealth. Proverbs 11:4 says, “Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.”

He continues to urge them towards trading in their dirty clothes for white ones, in order to cover their shameful nakedness. Throughout Scripture we see God talk about cleansing man from their sinfulness by making us “white” through the cleansing of our sins by Jesus’ blood and sacrifice. Jesus reminds them of the cross and that only He can remove their sin and shame, as was prophesied from the beginning and fulfilled in the gospels. White garments also signify light, which would also allow them to see themselves in truth, by casting the darkness withins.

Jesus finally offers them salve (medicine) for their blindness. Jesus is the great physician. He prioritizes healing the soul over the body, as the healing of our soul brings us into righteousness, that is eternal salvation. So, where do we get this salve for our eyes? It is through God’s Word. The Word of God is our food, water and medicine. Come to Jesus and eat, drink and be healed.

“Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me” (vs. 19-20).

As a mother, I have always used this line with my children, “I correct and discipline because I love you.” It took many years towards maturity for my kids to understand this concept. It didn’t make sense to the immature mind. I think it’s hard for immature Christians to understand this in the same way that a 3-year-old questions punishment. Jesus tells the lukewarm, wavering mind to sincerely repent. Jesus gives us insight into the process of listening and responding.  He will not force His way in, but He chases us down because he loves us. Jesus stands at the door of our hearts and knocks. In John 10:27, Jesus says that His sheep hear his voice. Our response is to let Him in, and He will come in and commune with us. This is a lovely picture of God’s forgiveness and grace. Ask God for ears to hear His voice.

“To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches” (vs. 21-22).

Jesus is reminding us that He was victorious over the same temptations. He urges the lukewarm church to be victorious and overcome the world through their faith. He tells them the great reward, which is to sit with Jesus on His throne. Jesus repeatedly urges the reader to have ears to hear. These are ears of understanding and wisdom, which come only through the power and teaching of Holy Spirit.

Sarai and Hagar

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”
Abram agreed to what Sarai said. So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.
When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.1-4

Recall the last chapter where God not only spoke to Abram, but He put him in a deep sleep while making a one-sided covenant with him. This covenant (contract) said that God would give Abram a son and make him into great big nation. He said He would make a lasting covenant that would bear fruit forever. Abram was 85 years old and Sarai was 75; there was still no baby. Clearly Sarai's child-bearing years had past. Sarai decided she was too old, so she thought God meant this child would come through some other woman than herself. So she tells Abram to sleep with her Egyptian maid-servant Hagar.

I imagine that Hagar must have been close to Sarai, as the Scriptures tell us she was Sarai's servant.  I'm sure she thought well of who she chose to try to bring about God's promise before time. God impregnating Sarai seemed way too impossible at this point, so she thinks, "maybe He meant..." Where else do we see this twist of the truth? Even though the Bible doesn't talk about satan clearly here, but we can sense him at work behind this scene. This was clearly a lie, and satan is the "father of all lies." Satan appearing to Eve in the garden... Satan was able to get Eve to question what God really said. Can't you hear satan in both incidents, "maybe He meant..." Then in nearly an instant Eve and Sarai sin, disobeying God. Sarai disobeyed God by not waiting on HIM to bring about the promise. Instead she took matters into her own hands, and it backfires. Not only does she have Hagar sleep with Abram, but she has them married too. I believe that she loses a friend by turning hate towards Hagar. Her sin was telling her to take her husband. The iniquities of the sin was the hatred by kicking her out, and a baby outside of their marriage. And... still no "promised" son. But I love how gracious our God is, as an angel of the Lord comes to Hagar's side in our next lesson.

The iniquities of this sin are nearly just as detrimental as the original sin, Eve's sin. Eve and Sarai led their husbands into sin as their husbands were quick to obey them. Regardless of who goes first here, all four turned their backs to God and did what they thought was best for themselves. All sin starts with the works of the enemy and selfishness.

Don't you hear it? Those words that you never thought would come into your mind are piercing strong. It's the enemy in your ear. "You don't need him anymore." "Everyone else is doing it. I have to fit in." "Did God really mean that?" "I'm not fit to do what He called me to do." "How can I quit? The pull is too strong." "I'm too busy to read the Bible." "Church is just not for me." "I don't want to go to church and be judged." "Let's not talk to her, she's weird." And on and on...

Lies Lies Lies

And then comes the point, the point where the thought is carried out by our selfishness. THIS is where it goes from temptation to sin. So, what happens next? You gain the temporary fix, but the long term effects are devastating. The sin solves the dilemma for a moment, but the iniquity is lasting. Some sins may have short term effects, but many sins have effects on your children, children's children, and so on, lasting up to four generations!

The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.' Numbers 14:18

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. James 3:14-16

So what, you ask? "What should I do if the thoughts are strong and I feel like there's no other way than to gratify myself? I mean, it is all about me, right? Love myself not my neighbor? Or maybe my neighbor too... if they are nice and fit in with me."

This is what the Lord says:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31

In order to get the long lasting joy and eternal life rewards that God promises us, then we should be taking all of those thoughts captive to Christ. This means that you should hold up every single one of those statements to God's word, and in doing this, you will make the demons leave. State a Bible verse out loud that counters the lie.
For example:

Lie: "I hate her; she cheated with my husband."
Truth: "Pray for even your enemies." - Matthew 5:44

Lie "She's prettier than me."
Truth " God says I'm fearfully and wonderfully made." - Psalm 139:14

Lie "All religions lead to the same God"
Truth "Jesus is the way the truth and the life. No one goes to the Father except through Him" John 14:6

Lie "God doesn't love me. Bad things continue to happen to me."
Truth "God died for you on the cross, in order to give you eternal life." John 3:16 | "He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." Matthew 5:45

Lie "I don't need God. I have everything I want."
Truth "You do not have the love of God in your heart, because you do not accept Jesus. But you accept others that come in their own name.  How could you believe? You accept glory from one another but not glory from God. John 5:41-44
Solution "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." Jeremiah 29:13

Lie "I need pride to get anywhere in this life."
Truth "Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall." Proverbs 16:18

Lie "I have to sleep with him to see if we are compatible."
Truth “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” Hebrews 13:4

Lie "I'm not giving money to the church. That's all they do is take money."
Truth "Everything on this earth is God's, even my money." Psalm 24:1 Honor God with your money and your best, then He will more than supply for your needs and wants. Proverbs 3:9-10 "Praise the LORD! How blessed is the man who fears the LORD, Who greatly delights in His commandments." Psalm 112:1

Lie "I don't need to read my Bible, I go to church."
Truth "God tells me to meditate on His Word day and night." Joshua 1:8 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

Partial truth "Don't judge them. That's what the Bible says."
Truth:  Don't judge them. Get rid of your sinfulness, then you can help your brother or sister with their sin. Matthew 7:1-5 .  The Bible says A LOT about not judging others. But it also says to judge those within the church. "What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.” 1 Corinthians 5:12,13

Lie "Success is how much money I make, and getting to the top of fame."
Truth "If you want to be great, you must serve others. Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve others, and give up His life for us." Matthew 20:26-28

Lie "Wisdom is gaining knowledge, and prestige through academics"
Truth "The righteous speak wisdom and justice" Psalm 37:30 -  Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness. James 3:13-18

Lie "Well she/he did it to me, so I'll do it back to her/him."
Truth “It was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But Jesus tells us to turn the other cheek. If anyone sues you for your shirt, give them your coat also. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. Matthew 5:38-42

Lie "I want to be what they are and have what they have. It's not fair"
Truth Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud 1 Corinthians 13:4  For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. James 3:16

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40

Genesis 15:8-21

Genesis 15:18-21Three times God promised to give Abraham's descendants this land, but he wanted to be sure. See below: Genesis 15:8

Three times;
Genesis 12:7a The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.”
Genesis 13:15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.
Genesis 15:18 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?”

But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?”
So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.”
Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.
Picture
Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age. In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”
When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates— the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”

At a first read, this seems a little confusing. Why did God put Abram in a deep sleep (last I recall he made Eve from his rib)? Why were their animals cut in half laid in some sort of aisle? After Abram fell in a deep sleep, God prophesied over Abram. To understand this, we have to look into the culture at that time. My final question is why would God ask for a pigeon and a dove? He didn't use them, at least at first sight it seems that way.

First, Abram wanted a visible sign of what He had promised him.  So this unconditional covenant between God and Abram was a one sided covenant. That's why God puts Abram in a deep sleep. This is God's promise, not an exchangeable, conditional agreement or contract.  The cutting of the animals were a visible sign of God's promise. The part that gets confusing is the cutting of the animals.

In those days, when two men made a contract/covenant between each other, they would do just this. They would cut the animals laying on opposite sides as if to make an aisle. Each person would pass through the aisle as if to say, "if you don't keep your end of the bargain, then you will end up like these animals." This is why it was called a blood covenant. This was a human, conditional, bargain between two people. So now do you see why God put Abram in a deep sleep? This was a one-sided, unconditional covenant that God made with Abram. The only one to pass through the divided animals was God, hence the "smoking firepot with a blazing torch." God would be the one to hold to the promise, and He would be the one to bring the prophecy to fruition.

Finally, why would God ask for a dove and pigeon? This one tripped me up. My first thought is that the dove is represented as the Holy Spirit in the New Testament, so I got that. But I was confused about the pigeon. So I did some research on them. And what do you know, the pigeon and dove names are used interchangeable. They actually represent 310 species! Now that may have not been the same in Abram's day, but it doesn't matter. What I see here is that God is showing the Holy Spirit there. My question is if there's two, does that mean the other represents Jesus?  I'm thinking maybe it's a Christophany. Regardless, God wanted the dove and pigeon to be there. This is the first mention of the dove and pigeon in Scripture. Later in the Levitical law, it says that if one is too poor to offer another animal, then they could sacrifice a young pigeon or dove. I see God's hand reaching down to love and care for the poor. Sometimes God's word contains portions of passages that are difficult; I've tried reading through some commentaries. It seems that theologians steer clear of this, but maybe I didn't read enough.

Application:
Has God made a promise to you, but have yet to see the fruition of the prophecy? Well this is where Abram was, and he asked God 3 times, how can he know.  Abram already said that he believed God, and God credited it to him as righteousness (Gen. 15:6). So belief is not what's in question here, as it may seem. To ask and to doubt are not the same. Let's take a look at James 1:6: But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. Abram did not doubt, but he did ask. James 1:6 tells us not to doubt, but at the same time, it says "when" you ask.

God complies with a visible sign. Do you feel like you want a visible sign of His promise? Ask Him. Ask Him to confirm His promise, without doubting. Now He may not bring about His promise right now just because you ask. It will not be in your timing or on your terms. God will make it happen in a miraculous way, because He is not going to share His glory. Don't worry, and have faith that the Lord is working in your favor. But I do believe that God will give you a visible sign if you ask him and keep asking as Abram did 3 times, on 3 different occasions.

Ask and believe

Prayer:
Lord, Holy One of Israel, Father of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, my Abba Father, you are the Perfect One. There is none like you. God I pray that you would show us or speak to us as you guide each step. Help us to be like Abram, as he has walked and trusted you each step of the way. I pray that you would take away our anxiety's that are not from you, they are from the devil. We trust your words God. Fear is placed by the enemy, so we stand firm and resist him. We love you Lord and we will continue in faith, love and trust.
In your Holy Righteous Name, Jesus Christ

Genesis 15:1-7

After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the LORD came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

Abrahamic Covenant:

God says 3 things to Abram
Fear Not: - Do not be afraid. Do not be terrified. (This is the fear that is wrong.) God tells us not to be afraid of anything other than Him who can kill the body and soul, which is God.  However, this is a reverence, honor, respect.
God tells Abram not to be afraid or terrified of Him.

I am your shield:
From גָּנַן (H1598)
a protector; also the scaly hide of the crocodile:--× armed, buckler, defence, ruler, scale, shield.

Your reward will be great:
From שָׂכַר (H7936)
 hire (9x), reward (9x), wages (6x), price (2x), fare (1x), worth (1x).

BUT - here comes the doubt.  Abram doesn't think it could happen because he is childless, so Abram provides God with a solution.
Say what?

Abrahamic Covenant - God's promise to Abraham.  God is the one fulfilling.
God says, no Abram your very own son will be your in heir...  just look at the stars, you will have as many descendants as the stars!

This time Abram believed.  His faith made Abram righteous in the eyes of God.

Consistently from Genesis to Revelation God requires FAITH to become righteous before Him.  Believe my friend.  Believe in the promises of God.  He speaks to you through His Word, and the Word will remain forever.

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.
Isaiah 40:8

Do you feel that you've grown too old to do what God has been calling you to do?  Please don't feel that way. Keep seeking His will; keep digging deep into His Word.  His plans are great for you and you are never too old OR TOO YOUNG to carry out God's plan for your life. In order to be in God's will, you must talk to Him, read His word and commune with other Christians.  The devil is sneaky and actually uses the word of God to try to trip you up. So it's super helpful to have other Christian friends who keep you accountable to discerning the voice of God.  The devil comes as an angel of light. He's an imitator of God.  He will take everything God has done that is good and try to use if for evil.  God implemented the very first place of worship, which is the tabernacle in the Old Testament.  How many churches do you know that are not teaching the truth, or the Word of God?

 Genesis 5:1

Thank you for your patience with my Bible studies.  I had to have a pacemaker put in, so I've been out of commission for some time.  I will no longer do the accountability quiz.  Let me know if that's something you miss and I can add it back in.

Genesis 15:1

After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:

“Do not be afraid, Abram.

I am your shield,

your very great reward.

I started this bible study with the whole chapter.  I prayed and I then split it down to half.  I prayed and could hear nothing from the Lord.  All I could think about was the struggles I've had over the last month, recovering from the pacemaker surgery. Feeling helpless was extremely hard. It was a very difficult recovery and I had settled into a deep depression.

So I left the study alone until I could hear God's voice.

I could sum up the last month right after my pacemaker surgery in one word...

"Scared"

Scared? Me scared to die? Since becoming a Christian I've always been fearless about dying. I have been confident in my destiny, as my eternal life is secure in Christ.  I have always taught my children fear nothing other than your Almighty God. I tell Matt, if you are afraid, then the enemy is trying to keep you from the blessing behind it.  But I was...

scared.

I have felt like I have left my Bible Study group hanging and it broke my heart that you waited so long for the next study. And now I leave you with one verse.

"Do not be afraid, Abram"

"Do not be afraid, Sarah"

Do not be afraid, _______"

If you are scared right now and it's not fearing God, then I cast it out in Jesus Name.  Fear is from the devil and having authority over him, you can tell him to leave and he has to.

God tells us why we should not fear:

"I am your shield,"

He is your protector,

your very great reward.

We are heirs with Christ.  He is our very great reward.

I recognized this fear to be of the enemy because fear does not come from the Lord. Scripture tells us that fear is not from God, so I was able to discern being scared was not from Him.
"for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." - 2 Timothy 1:7

I urge you to stand bold before your awesome God with spirit that is powerful, loving and with self-discipline. Come boldly to the throne of grace.
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16

I was in great need as I was suffering and fearful of death, and I needed God to take it away.  I prayed and prayed and He didn't.  But when my friend Amber stood with me against the schemes of the enemy and she commanded him to leave, he did.  I believe that in this battle, 2 or more had to stand together on God's Word of truth against the devil.

Thank you friends for being patient with me.  I had a hard recovery, but God is here.  And I'm moving forward well.  Praise His Holy Name!

Next week: Let's dig into this chapter!  There's some good stuff here!

  Click on the Correct Answer

When Abram heard that Lot was taken captive, he didn't hesitate to take his trained men that were born closest to him.  This shows what a  loyal man Abram is to his own family.  Lot had selfishly settled in Sodom where it was fruitful but the people of the land did evil in the sight of God.  When this fruitful land was taken, Lot and all the goods were taken as well.  Abram went out and defeated these men in this war.

Genesis 14:17-24
After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) And he blessed him and said,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth;
and blessed be God Most High,
who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”

And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the LORD, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me. Let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share.

This is where we see the word "tithe", which means a 10th of.  This act of giving a tithe to the High Priest Melchizedek shows the heart of Abram and His love for God.  Today we give a cheerful tithe or an amount to our church  showing our heart and love for God.

Melchizedek is a Christophony which is an appearing of Christ in the Old Testament.
(Read Hebrews 7:1-10) Verse 3: There is no record of his father or mother or any of his ancestors—no beginning or end to his life. He remains a priest forever, resembling the Son of God.

My favorite part of this story is the fact that Abram took NOTHING from the king of Sodom for himself.  He wanted to be sure that the king of Sodom wouldn't get the glory that belonged to God.

So, Abram gives a 10th first, and then takes nothing from the war.  How in the world does he survive?  Do you worry about your life about what you will eat or wear or drive?  Can you imagine giving a tenth of your earnings to your church even when you don't think you have it?  I dare you to try it.  Watch God work so big in your life as you begin to trust Him and leave the glory to Him and not to others.  The joy that you will receive is incomparable to any other happiness of this world.

Luke 6:38
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

Genesis 13

Read Genesis 13:1-18

Abram and Lot went up out of Egypt as Pharaoh had told them to leave.  When they settled, the land was not big enough for Lot and Abram and it was causing strife between the two groups.  Abram didn't want conflict so he said to Lot in verse 8 and 9, "Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are kinsmen. Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.” Lot saw that the Jordan valley was well watered like the garden of the Lord and Egypt, so he chose the better land. He moved his tent all the way to Sodom (men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the LORD).

God then tells Abram to look to the North, South, West and East and says that he will give him all of this land to your offspring.  He says He will make Abrams offspring as many as the dust of the earth.  Verse 18: So Abram moved his tent and came and settled by the oaks of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and there he built an altar to the LORD.

Notice that Abram and Lot were greatly blessed so much that there wasn't enough land for both of them to settle and there was strife between the two groups of people. Matthew Henry's commentary says, "Abram shows himself to be a man of cool spirit, that had the command of his passion, and knew how to turn away wrath by a soft answer." Abram was fine letting Lot choose, which means he was content with what the Lord had blessed him with.  He also trusted that the Lord would provide and guide him no matter where he went.

Lot on the other hand was eager to choose the land that would allow him to grow, not consulting the wisdom of God. His interests were independant of God.  He was selfish in two regards, not asking God, and not being concerned about his Uncle.  Lot continued all the way to Sodom.  "All the way" leads me to believe that he could have settled before he came to the wicked people of Sodom.  I imagine there was something more enticing about Sodom, one that was for worldly gain. He did not care that the people of Sodom did not believe or care about knowing God.  I wonder if he thought he could stay out of their sin while living amongst them.

Isn't it interesting how God then reminds Abram of his promise after this incident? The first thing Abram does is build an altar to the Lord.  This is evidence that Abram put God first in his life.

Strife is guaranteed to come upon us.  This is inevitable and especially amongst loved ones.  We should take the example of Abram by solving the problem with a soft answer, consulting God's Word.  Lot on the other hand gives an example of the selfish, independent man, who seeks the pride of life, the lust of the flesh, and lust of the eyes.

Turn to John 2:16
For everything in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--comes not from the Father but from the world.

Lot's perspective in choosing was based on a worldly gain.  Isn't it interesting that he was already abundantly rich?  However, he still wanted more.  The world will satisfy the flesh for a brief time.  It's a temporary fix, and it always runs out.  Only God can give you food and water for the soul that will never run out.  God's word is your food and water.  If you aren't filling your soul with God's word, then you will be hungry and thirsty.  That's why all people seek out more land, more possessions, more sex, more food, more wine, more relationship, more shopping, more school, etc etc.  These things are not bad things, as God freely gave them to us to enjoy, but they do not satisfy the depths of the soul.  These things are temporary as we will all face the same after one day.

“Come, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
Incline your ear, and come to me;
hear, that your soul may live;
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.
Isaiah 55:1-3

Matthew Henry Commentary:
Passion and selfishness make men rude. Lot looked to the goodness of the land; therefore he doubted not that in such a fruitful soil he should certainly thrive. But what came of it? Those who, in choosing relations, callings, dwellings, or settlements, are guided and governed by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, or the pride of life, cannot expect God's presence or blessing.
Next week: We will study Genesis 14.  We will see how Lot gets taken away captive and Abram gathers soldiers to retrieve him.

1.   What does the Soveirgnty of God mean?
  • God is above all things.  He rules over all.  And nothing takes Him by surprise.  God foretold us about Jesus' coming and redeeming us when He cursed the snake. The soveirgnty of God is a character trait.
  • God is limited and can only tell Abram where to go.  He cannot put His direction on our hearts.  He tells us what to do and hopes that we make the right choice.

Genesis 12:10-20

10Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land.11When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance, 12and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.” 14When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. 15And when the princes of Pharaoh saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. 16And for her sake he dealt well with Abram; and he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

17But the LORD afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18So Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her, and go.” 20And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him, and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.

There was a famine in the land of Canaan, so Abram traveled to Egypt for relief.  Sojourned means that it was a temporary stay and he was merely passing through.
Before Abram arrived into Egypt you can see fear set in on Abram, and he began to plot.  He told Sarai, his wife to lie and say that she is his sister.  Abram feared that the Egyptians would kill Abram because Sarai was so beautiful.  When fear sets in, trusting God suffers and Abram makes a rash decision without consulting God.  Here Abram relies on his wife's beauty to save his life.  As Abram gets side tracked from God's path, Sarai is taken into Pharaoh's house. Pharaoh dealt well with Abram because of Sarai.  But then, God afflicted Pharaoh's house with plagues because of Sarai.  Pharaoh found out that Sarai was Abram's wife and became angry and sent them away.
Sometimes God causes hardship to make us move.  When we lived in Bristow God was causing financial hardship on us, and we were forced to move.  Matt and I were frustrated and questioning God moving us there, as we thought we would raise our kids in this great school, big house, and awesome community. We drove 45 minutes to our church every week, but the luxuries of living in that house were much to be desired and worth the drive.  As we questioned God, we began to rely on our own knowledge.  So naturally we looked for a smaller house in the same area.  We had to take a big detour in God's plan by trusting our own instincts.  We went so far as to buy this house in Gainesville.  God pressed greatly on Matt's heart that this house was not His will.  Matt finally listened and we lost $6,000 by backing out of this house.  In obeying God, we were back on His plan and He opened up a PERFECT home in Fairfax, Virginia only 1.7 miles from our church!  There was a great cost to our disobedience.  However, God in His grace got us back on track in His will.  Abram lost his wife for a period of time.  I imagine that it was very difficult for them to live in this season of disobedience.  Have you counted the costs of walking in your own ways in sin?
This passage also shows us that even Abram's faith wavered.  We know Abram as a man of great faith. His faith was so great in God, that the Lord counted it as righteousness (Genesis 15:6).  Faith is the key to Christianity.  Read Romans chapter 4 to expound on the idea of the faith of Abraham and our faith in Christ.

Hebrews 11:1 (NIV) sums up "faith."
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Genesis 12:6-9

When they came to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him.  From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to the LORD and called upon the name of the LORD. And Abram journeyed on, still going toward the Negeb.

In Genesis 11 Abram made the decision to leave Ur of the Chaldeans and head to Canaan. However Abram stopped in Haran, and THEN God spoke His calling to Abram. Recall Genesis 12 where God calls Abram to the land He will show him.  Here is where Abram sets out to continue his journey to the land of Canaan.  Isn't it interesting that Abram set out towards Canaan before God told him to go, AND before He actually shows Abram the land He will give to his descendants? Yet, 3 chapters later God tells him that HE brought him from Ur, not from Haran where He actually spoke to Abram.

Genesis 12:4 (God spoke to Abram AFTER he'd already set out towards Canaan)
So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran.

Genesis 15:7 (3 chapters later)
"He also said to him, "I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it."

What do you think this tells us?  It shows us a specific characteristic of who God is.

God is sovereign.

He already knows what you will do and if He wants to guide you without you even knowing it, HE CAN.  Have you ever looked back to a time period when you weren't following God or may have not even known Him?  Yet you see your footsteps were ordered to meet the right person who would lead you to Christ, or to that church.  Maybe you joined this Bible study out of curiosity, but it's actually GOD who planted that curiosity in your heart.  If this is you, then keep up with these studies and you will watch how the Lord will transform your life and how He will order your steps to the land that He will show you, to the blessings He will give you.  You are loved and held precious, dear to the Lord's heart.  Let Him love you and speak to you everyday and you will find peace in such a hard present age.

The best example I can recall of God's SOVEREIGNTY is when my dad started going to Belize every year with my church here in Northern Virginia.  A long time ago (years and years well before our trip), I recall my dad watching the travel channel and I think Belize was on the television.  It happened to be when I was visiting, and dad said to me, "Sarah if there's any place in this world that I would love to go to, then it would be Belize."

Now I wholeheartedly believe that God ordained that moment and planted this desire into my dad's heart.

Fast forward to a couple of years later, and my church is going to .... you guessed it, Belize on a missions trip.  Amber coerced me to go, and I'm so grateful she did.  I wrote my letters and I was reading it over and then that thought popped in my mind.  Oh man, dad wants to go to Belize, but I wasn't sure how he would feel about a mission's trip.  So I was nervous to call.  I finally got the courage, telling myself that it doesn't hurt to just ask.  When I told him we were going and that it's a missions trip where we will work to help this village he said, "I'll go."  He was calm and collect yet there was excitement in his voices.  Wow.  We went together that first year in 2011, and he's been going every year after without me, but with my church!!  It's amazing how God works like that, but it's far beyond our minds understanding.  I just trust and recall these wonderful things He's done.
Next week:  We will see where Abram lies.

1The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.

2“I will make you into a great nation,

and I will bless you;

I will make your name great,

and you will be a blessing.a

3I will bless those who bless you,

and whoever curses you I will curse;

and all peoples on earth

will be blessed through you.”b

4So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. 5He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

Three points:
1: Pruning
2: Prophecy
3: Blessings

Pruning
The Lord told Abram to "leave" his people and his country and set out to the land He will show him.  In order to trust God, we are often told to leave something behind or God may remove it.  This is referred to pruning in the Bible.
John 15:2   - Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

It wasn't until I started gardening that I understood pruning.  A neighbor used to take care of my gerbre daisies.  I thought I could just plant them and then they would grow without any work.  The daisies needed pruning.  The way she described it to me has ingrained forever in my mind in regards to God pruning us as His children and church.  As a part of it dies or makes it's cycle of life with the flower, then it needs to be pruned.  Pruning means to cut away from the flower, plant, or tree.  The roots push nutrients and water up to each part of the plant. The plant works extra hard to push nutrients and water (life) up to the dying parts. The living parts suffer, because the plant is using most of it's sources on the dying part, trying to revive it.  Therefore, the plant ceases to produce fruit or flowers.  If the parts that are dying are cut away from the plant, then the nutrients and water are able to free flow full force to the living parts, producing much fruit or flowers.  In order to grow, we must obey God and leave behind whatever He asks from us.

Prophecy
God tells Abram that He will make his name great and make him into a great nation.  Later in Scripture, we find that this means that Abram will have as many descendants as the stars.  If God tells you an outcome that has yet to come about, then this is a prophetic word.  Again, the only way to get to the outcome is through trusting God and obeying His Word.  Yes, we get off track and God helps us back into His will.  He is full of grace and love!  We will see later in Scripture where Abram veers from God's will a bit and how God redeems him.

Blessings
Have you ever felt like everything just goes wrong, one thing after another?  Are you ready to see God bless your life, your family and/or career?  Everyone of us will have many hiccups along this road called life, but we can have a blessed life.  We see this in God's promise to Abram.  If you want a blessed life from the Lord, then obey His Word and walk in Christ. But remember the first point.  If you are obeying God and walking in Christ and things seem to be breaking one thing after the other, then refer back to the point on pruning.  God may be taking you through a phase to take away the parts that are not bearing fruit.

When I was a brand new Christian in at Life Bible College there was a man that came to our church.  He had a prophetic gift and he laid hands on me and prayed over me.  God gave him a prophetic word for me.  I remember feeling a little disappointed when I received it, because I wanted it "now".  Haha!  Isn't that the way of our world?  He said God is going to use you in big ways, but it won't be for 10 more years.  Ten years to a young 21 year old girl felt like a life time away and being a new Christian, I felt disappointed and unchosen.  I went about my Christian walk trusting God at times, and disobeying at times.  The Lord would bless and prune me over the next 10 years, always pulling me back in line with His will.  But quite honestly it was mostly pruning and very little blessing. I'm not saying I didn't have much to be thankful for, I had LOTS to be thankful for. But over the course of the next 10 years there would be a consistent "leaving" things behind and pruning of my character.  Of course I forgot all about this word for years.  And then, we became neighbors with Kenneth and Amber who happened to be a youth pastor.  We became friends and God called Kenneth to start a church.  They asked Matt and I to come alongside them.  A flashback of that word comes to mind!!  Wow, 10 years later.  Our church as been going for 3 1/2 years now!  God is good!
Next week: We will study Genesis 12:6-9.  We will see the importance of worship as Abram starts his journey.
I will answer on the next lesson.

Terah’s Descendants

27Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran fathered Lot. 28Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his kindred, in Ur of the Chaldeans. 29And Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and Iscah.30Now Sarai was barren; she had no child.

31Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife, and they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan, but when they came to Haran, they settled there. 32The days of Terah were 205 years, and Terah died in Haran.

Here begins the story and introduction of Abram and Sarai. God has not yet changed their names to the well know Abraham and Sarah of the Bible stories.  Haran, the son of Terah, and the brother of Abram died, but had a son named Lot.  Terah, Abram, Sarai and Lot went away from Ur of Chaldeans (an idolatrous land) to Canaan but stopped and settled in Haran.  Terah died in Haran. Haran is about midway between Ur and Canaan.

As Chapter 11 comes to a close, we can sum it up with 3 important marks in this time.  The tower of Babel being built, the confusion of tongues, and now the calling of one man Abram.

Genesis 15:7, "He also said to him, "I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it."

This is a couple of chapters later showing that God is the one who brought Abram out of Ur, this idolatrous land.
When God calls us, He calls us to move out of the state we are in and many times physically out of the place where we are at. When I got saved, I was at Virginia Tech living a very worldly lifestyle with parties and classes few and far between.  The Lord justified me on the day that I committed my life to Him on spring break in Panama City.  He then called me unto Himself for sanctification by having me move into the dorms at a small Bible College that was a smidgen of the size of VT.  Everyone's story is different, as Lilli was saved at age four.  She was justified and now being sanctified as we continue to teach her God's ways to live.  Ask God how and where you can go to be transformed into the likeness of Jesus.  It is always good to have someone to walk alongside you as you both study God's word and grow in Him.

Romans 12:2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Next week: We will study God's promise to Abram.
I will answer on the next lesson.

1. What was Cain's punishment for killing Abel his brother?

Reply to Submit Answers

Genesis 4:17-26 (NLT)

Cain had sexual relations with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain founded a city, which he named Enoch, after his son. Enoch had a son named Irad. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech.

Lamech married two women. The first was named Adah, and the second was Zillah. Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the first of those who raise livestock and live in tents.

**** Interjection *** Genealogy is super important, but can be quite boring to read.  Just wait until we get to numbers! Ha!  Remember the Bible is true stories that tell us God's love for us from Creation to the very end of times (until this world is destroyed).  And so, genealogy, as boring as it is, gives us concrete evidence that what the writers of the Bible are telling us are true.  Mose's wrote the first 5 books of the Bible, also called the Pentateuch.  These were true stories, about our ancestors, that were passed down from generations down to Moses (We will get to Moses soon).

His brother’s name was Jubal, the first of all who play the harp and flute. Lamech’s other wife, Zillah, gave birth to a son named Tubal-cain. He became an expert in forging tools of bronze and iron. Tubal-cain had a sister named Naamah. 23One day Lamech said to his wives,

“Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;

listen to me, you wives of Lamech.

I have killed a man who attacked me,

a young man who wounded me.

24If someone who kills Cain is punished seven times,

then the one who kills me will be punished seventy-seven times!”

**** Interjection *** As you can see the line of Cain was a wicked generation.  Lamech takes two wives and becomes a murderer.  We will also see with genealogy how sin is passed down from parent to child.  However, it's ultimately the choice of each individual of the path they take towards God or away from God.  Deuteronomy 24:16 says, "Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin."  But we see with genealogy in the Bible that many take the paths of their parents, making parenting such a great responsibility that God gives us for our children.

The Birth of Seth

25Adam had sexual relations with his wife again, and she gave birth to another son. She named him Seth,g for she said, “God has granted me another son in place of Abel, whom Cain killed.” 26When Seth grew up, he had a son and named him Enosh. At that time people first began to worship the LORD by name.

**** Interjection ***  So Adam and Eve have another son named Seth.  Again, genealogy being important, we will see that Noah (who all people come from today) is from the line of Seth.  This is the first place we see God called "Lord"

Genesis 5 will be more genealogy but I will try to brush through it and not bore you too much :) I'm hoping to quickly get to Noah.
I will answer on the next lesson.

1. What clothing did God use to cover Adam and Eve?

I asked my Pastor to shed some light on the myth about the Bermuda Triangle, and his thoughts are that Genesis 2 tells us that it was between the Tigris and Euphrates, which places it in the middle east.  However, after Noah and the flood, the topography of the land changed, which could change the course of the rivers.  It's also possible that these two rivers were simply named after the original Tigris and Euphrates.  And the other two rivers mentioned in Genesis 2 are completely unknown after the flood.  Therefore any theory about the location of Garden of Eden is merely speculation.

Genesis 4:1-16

Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of theLord I have brought forth a man.” Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

**Interjection***  So here we have the first offspring Cain and Abel.  They both brought an offering to the Lord.  Why do you think God accepted Abel's offering but not Cains?  He brought an offering didn't he?  (An offering is like a gift for God).  The reason is because Abel gave his very best to God.   He gave the fat portions from the firstborn of his flock.  Don't you want to give the ones you love your very best?  Well Cain brought an offering but it wasn't his best.  His heart was not right and soon we will see how God judges and sees to ones heart, because of what Cain does next.

8Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”d While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

***Interjection***  Cain was jealous of Abel and he killed him!!  Cain's heart was full of sin and wickedness.

9Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”

“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”

13Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”

***Interjection*** Wow! What was the worst punishment for Cain? To be separate from God's presence. It's like us... we will be restless until we seek God's presence.  We need God and we need to know Him to feel satisfied.  Nothing else in this world will truly fill the void in our life like God.

15But the Lord said to him, “Not soe ; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod,f east of Eden.

***Interjection***  It sounds to me like God created other human other than Adam and Eve.  Hmmm....
What do you think?

Next:  We will start to see a lot of genealogy throughout the Bible.  This is historically important to know our ancestors and to see that we all came from Noah who cam from Abraham who came from Adam.  We will see that Jesus Christ comes from the line of David, as this is a fulfillment of prophecy.  I'm getting ahead of myself!  Okay till next one.
I will answer on the next lesson.

Genesis 3:21-24

21 And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife.

***Interjection**** Do you remember when Adam and Eve first realized they were naked?  They sewed Fig leaves to cover themselves.  But after God finds them in their disobedience, HE makes their covering that's way better than fig leaves.  He covers them with sewn animal skins.  This is just like in our life.  We try to cover our shame with work, good deeds, even addiction... basically any idol (when our hope is in something or someone other than God).  But God's way is always better and it's by His doing, not ours.  He covers our sin with the blood of Jesus Christ!  If we rest in that, then our life will be an outpouring of Him and we will have peace in ANY circumstance.

22 Then the Lord God said, “Look, the human beings[e] have become like us, knowing both good and evil. What if they reach out, take fruit from the tree of life, and eat it? Then they will live forever!”

****Interjection*****  This is where we see the trinity!  God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit - all three in one God.  I've highlighted the "us" that indicates Jesus being with God even in the beginning.

Remember when we talked about God's blessing in the curse?  God didn't want Adam and Eve living forever in these tainted bodies and minds.

23 So the Lord God banished them from the Garden of Eden, and he sent Adam out to cultivate the ground from which he had been made. 24 After sending them out, the Lord God stationed mighty cherubim to the east of the Garden of Eden. And he placed a flaming sword that flashed back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Being banished from the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were not allowed back to the Garden of Eden.  God stationed BIG angels (mighty cherubim) to the east of the Garden and a flaming sword to guard the tree of life.  Paradise Lost!

*****Only speculation****  Some seem to think that the Garden of Eden is under the Bermuda Triangle!!  I think this is a pretty cool theory. Next week I'll explain other speculations.

Next we will talk about Cain and Abel, sons of Adam and Eve.
I will answer on the next lesson.

Q 1: What did the woman tell the serpent that will happen to her if she ate from the tree of knowledge?
Q 2: Did the devil lie to the woman about the tree?
Q 3: What is the first thing Adam and Eve noticed after they ate the fruit?

Reply to Submit Answers

Genesis 3:14-20

God first looked at the serpent and said "“Because you have done this,

“Cursed are you above all livestock

and all wild animals!

You will crawl on your belly

and you will eat dust

all the days of your life.

15And I will put enmity

between you and the woman,

and between your offspringa and hers;

he will crushb your head,

and you will strike his heel.”

---- Interjection ---- This is the very first time that we see where God is already planning our redemption from our sin.  This is the first time we see where God gives us clues to what Jesus will do on the cross.  The serpent is being cursed, but Satan is being cursed ultimately. "he will crush your head" - refers to Christ crushing Satan at the cross and winning back humanity to God (for those who believe in His son).  "and you will strike his heel" - I believe refers to the pain it took to get to the cross and the sacrifice Jesus made for us to crush the devil.

The curse of woman:

16To the woman he said,

“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;

with painful labor you will give birth to children.

Your desire will be for your husband,

and he will rule over you.”

----Interjection---- Childbearing is VERY painful, and so is everything leading up to and after childbirth for a woman - from puberty, to birthing, to menopause. This is our curse because Eve disobeyed God.  You don't have a choice in this if you are a woman.  Women have been trying to gain their rights in this world all the way back to day one.  This is because of what Eve did.  Man has always ruled over women and even today.  You can thank Eve for that :)

17To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’

“Cursed is the ground because of you;

through painful toil you will eat food from it

all the days of your life.

18It will produce thorns and thistles for you,

and you will eat the plants of the field.

19By the sweat of your brow

you will eat your food

until you return to the ground,

since from it you were taken;

for dust you are

and to dust you will return.”

20Adamc named his wife Eve,d because she would become the mother of all the living.

----Interjection----  Adam was cursed by not being able to eat that fruit.  God now curses the ground because of Adam's sin.  This means that man will now have to work hard for his food and it will produce thorns and thistles.  This means that the ground will work against Adam, meaning he will have to make a living working the fields just to produce his food.  We see this VERY true for men.  They are always worried about money and food and making a living.  You can thank Adam for listening to Eve and disobeying God for this.  We can see how man today feels like he can never get ahead no matter how much money they do or don't have, they always feel the need more.  This is due to the curse.  We also see how the ground works against man.  In America, we've tried to get around famine by genetically altering food, but it still works against us as we lose the valuable nutrients by doing this.  The ground is cursed by God and man will always sweat trying to make it produce the food we need to live.  Then God curses man (and woman) with death.  We were created from the dust of the ground, and to the dust we return.  We know this is true because we know that bodies decompose when they are dead and buried.

This is a really cool truth that I love to share!!!  We see God's grace EVEN IN THE CURSE!!  You see, God's plan was for us not to die and to be able to freely walk with Him and talk with Him.  But when Adam and Eve "fell" by disobeying God, sin entered the world and tainted our life and bodies.  God loves you and me so much that He didn't want us to live forever in these terrible minds and bodies.  So we see how it's actually a BLESSING that God causes us to die first, so that He can redeem us from death.

We will see in the next study how God banishes them from the garden and about some pretty cool speculation about where the garden of Eden is today!
I will answer on the next lesson.
