Creation:  God is above all, and Jesus was with God in the beginning.

Fall of man:  God made man in His own image and saw that he was very good.  He created woman from man's rib.  Man and woman disobeyed God.  Sin entered the world by deception of the fallen angel, Lucifer/Satan.

Life has a rough start as evil enters the world so badly that God grieves for ever making man.

But one man found favor with God... Noah.

God destroys the earth and every living thing except Noah, his wife and 3 sons and 2 of every kind of animal, male and female, and 7 pairs of clean animals, male and female by way of the ark.

After the flood and Noah and his sons live on dry land, Noah becomes drunk from his vineyard.  Ham sins against God by seeing his father naked (Scripture doesn't go into detail.)  Noah curses the lineage of Ham's son, Canaan.

What we gather so far:
God is just and holy.
God is gracious and finds favor by the way of faith in Him.
God makes a covenant with Noah and every living creature after him (symbol is the rainbow.)
Sin has to be paid for through sacrifice.
Satan has been cursed.
The ground has been cursed.
Man and woman are cursed.
This is due to disobedience.

But, God has made a way, a redemptive plan, and he gives insight even in the curse.  Jesus is revealed when God curses satan saying that the offspring of the woman (Jesus) will crush the head of the serpent (satan).  And satan will strike Jesus' heel.  This is an insight to the redemptive work of Jesus Christ on the cross.

Main point to gather:  Trust in Jesus as your savior, as He is the ultimate sacrifice for your sins.  Find favor with God through faith.

Genesis 9:18-28

18The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) 19These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the whole earth.

20Noah, a man of the soil, proceededa to plant a vineyard. 21When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside. 23But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked.

24When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25he said,

“Cursed be Canaan!

The lowest of slaves

will he be to his brothers.”

This is some very important information regarding genealogy.  We will see the lines of Ham, Shem and Japheth and the differences of personalities making very different cultural people (all people come from these three men).  Do you think you belong to your family?  You are likely a lot like some of your lineage and your culture as a whole.

Here we see Noah become drunk, and so drunk that he passes out in his tent butt naked. There is an unpleasant, sinful implication here regarding Ham the father of Canaan.  He clearly saw his father naked.  It is implied that something may have happened in the sense that Ham mistreated his father in his drunken state (one side theologians ascribe to).  Whether Ham just looked at his father with sinful eyes (other side theologians ascribe to) or he did something worst, it's clear in Scripture that Ham sinned against God in this moment.  Shem and Japheth take a garment into cover their father while turned the other way not to see his naked body.

When Noah woke, he found out what his son Ham had done.  This is an implication that something unpleasant was done to Noah while he was passed out, whether it was mocking his naked body or something worst, Scripture does not say exactly.  But we do know that this sin was bad enough to curse the entire line of Canaan (Ham's son's lineage).  We are unsure why God chose one of Ham's son's to curse, but his sons were Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan. (Gen 10:6)   Scripture doesn't say but it's possible that Noah had also seen Ham's sinful weakness in his grandson Canaan.  Again, we are unsure according to Scripture.

Going forward, keep in mind the curse of the Canaanites.  This passage will be very important as we see this genealogy unfold.  The Canaanites will be cursed being the lowest of slaves to the brothers lineage.  Remember this is due to sin.  This is the beginnings of understanding generational sin.  And we will see later in Scripture the immorality of the Canaanites.

Keep in mind that God looks at the heart while man looks at the outward appearance.

This Scripture makes me think about my own life and my own sin and the effect that it will have on my children.  It is likely that my weaknesses will also be my children's weaknesses.  However, the difference for us as New Testament followers of Jesus is that our sins are covered by the blood of Jesus as we continue to have faith in His sacrifice for our sins (ALL YOUR SINS).  My prayer daily is for God to cover my parenting with His grace.  Remember what pleases God.

F A I T H

Continue to trust God and seek His will in all you do, and peace that surpasses all understanding will be with you.

As we continue to walk through Scripture and we understand our history and creation, keep these things in mind.

Faith, repentance, and  obedience

Trust God and obey His word.  When you mess up, come boldly to the throne of grace.  And He is faithful to forgive.  Ham likely did not have a repentant heart, and it was likely not the only incident as Noah cursed the line of his one particular son.

Hebrews 4:16

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Next week: Continuing chapter 9 we will look at Japheth and Shem
I will answer on the next lesson.

Genesis 9:1-18

1Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.
2The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands. 3Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.

4“But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. 5And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.

6“Whoever sheds human blood,

by humans shall their blood be shed;

for in the image of God

has God made mankind.

7As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”

God's commanded Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply, and here He tells Noah the same thing.  God also tells this to Abraham, as well as Jacob.  This is a command that is thread throughout God's word.  Aren't children a blessing from the Lord?  It is a direct command from God to expand His number of children and reproduce.  However, don't be discouraged if you don't have children, as Paul encourages the single person in their undivided devotion to God.

Verse 2 says that fear and dread will fall on the animals.  Do you often wonder how in the world did Noah gather all these animals, as they are terrified of man? It seems to me according to this verse that it wasn't always this way.  It must have been a different kind of world with the animals were without fear of Noah as he gathered them into the ark.

God now gives all of the animals of the earth to Noah and his family as food. We see some ground rules that God lays down with Noah and mankind.  They are not to eat the blood of animals or any living thing.
God will demand an accounting for all death of man and animal.  It seems that God is saying that he will demand accounting for taking your own life or someone else's life.  The animals must not be killed with cruelty, but must be used for food or sacrifice.  God says that murder is punishable by death.

A second time He tells Noah to be fruitful and multiply!

We see how much God values the life of mankind and animals.  We should also value humans life and respect the purpose and life of animals that God created.

Jesus said, "Let the children come to me, for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Reproduction is God's will for many of us, and we should intentionally teach them the truth of God's words. I'm praying for each or you and your family's as we walk together as children of the Most High God.  Let's love and respect one another with forgiving and gracious hearts (thank you Pastor Kenneth for that reminder.)
Next week: God will establish His covenant with Noah.
I will answer on the next lesson.

Genesis 8:20-22

Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.

“As long as the earth endures,

seedtime and harvest,

cold and heat,

summer and winter,

day and night

will never cease.”

Unclean vs. clean:  The clean animals are the animals that God allows them to eat, and the unclean animals cannot be eaten i.e. dirty.

Do you find it peculiar that God says, "even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood."
If God destroyed all the evil in the world, why would he say this?  Well because He destroyed all the wicked men at the time, but he did not destroy sin within man's heart.  We are all born into sin, including Noah.  But Noah found favor with God through faith, and Noah offered sacrifices to God for his sins.  In fact, this is the first thing Noah does when he gets off the boat!  He could have started work on building his city, but He chose God first.  Would you say that your child is a sinner or innocent?  You hear parents often say about their young child, "Oh he's so rotten" or "She's a mess."  It's the truth, even though they are saying it in a sweet voice. :)  Children are born into sin.  Every person is born in need of saving from sin and death.

What a beautiful promise that the Lord makes.  He will never again destroy all living creatures by the way of the flood again, and as long as the earth remains then God promises to make the seasons run.  Here's what we see God promise:
  •      He will not curse the ground again as He had down.
  •      He will never destroy mankind by the way of the flood again
  •      He will cause the seasons and nights and days to run their course as long as the earth remains.
God is not saying that he will never destroy the earth.  Actually in Matthew 24:35 Jesus says, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away."  So, God promises never to flood the earth again.  However, God will destroy the heavens and the earth, and He will create a new heaven and new earth.  In fact, the Lord is going to one day destroy it by fire.  See 2 Peter 3:11.
Everyone has faith in something, but some put their faith in the wrong thing.  Pastor Kenneth says atheists have a lot of faith to believe that all of this came from nothing.  People who live to save the earth have their own religion worshipping creation rather than the Creator Himself.  Romans 1:25 says, "They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen." All of you recyclers out there, I commend you for being good stewards (we recycle too), but don't put your hope in the earth.

Have you noticed that every day and every night, the sun always rises and sets as promised by God here in Scripture.  We will continue to see promises throughout Scripture and continue to see that God is always faithful and true. He can be trusted!
Next week: We will study Genesis 9.  We will look at the God's commands about eating the animals and about multiplying to fill the earth.
I will answer on the next lesson.
Correction from last week:  I said that I would choose God every time under the "Implement" block.  Man I wish I chose God every time!  My desire is to choose God in every situation, but as you know we all fall short and are sinners.  I meant to say that it is my desire to choose God no matter the season :)  I hope you guys read it that way and could see my heart.  I re-read this portion to Matt because it was a helpful study when we were dealing with a business deal that fell through.  My stomach turned when I heard the way that could have been taken by you.  Please feel free to ask questions about anything I say!  Iron sharpens Iron!!!
