Genesis 11:7
Genesis 11:1-9
1Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. 2And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. 4Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” 5And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. 6And the LORD said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.” 8So the LORD dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth. And from there the LORD dispersed them over the face of all the earth.

God had told Noah and his sons to multiply and "FILL" the earth (Genesis 9:1), to disperse making nations of people.  Isn't it interesting how the people (who have even come from the line of Noah in his lifetime) are already rebelling and disobeying God's direct command?  All of the people had one language, which was the original Hebrew language.  They worked together against God's command to build for themselves one city and a tower to heaven.

In verse 4 they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”

I see three problems with their will to be in one city as one nation with a tower to heaven.
  • "build a tower with its top in the heavens" - The desire to be like or greater than God.  This was Satan's mistake in the heavens, as he and 1/3 of his angels were cast down from heaven.  I see a similar outcome for these people.
  • "let us make a name for ourselves" - Here we see the desire for the pride of life.  They wanted to make their own name great, and take the glory from God.  "For everything in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--comes not from the Father but from the world." 1 John 2:16
  • They blatantly speak the direct opposite of God's original command to Noah and his three sons.  Here's the third problem: rebellion.
1: Arrogant spirit
2: Pride of life
3: Rebel heart

Proverbs 16:18 says, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Pride and arrogance are clearly the issue with the building of the tower of Babel.

I see the dispersement in the people of the tower of Babel and the confusing of their languages a lot like the fall of the angel Lucifer, who we know as Satan.
Satan says,
“I will ascend to heaven;
I will raise my throne above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.
I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High.”
Isaiah 14:13-14 NIV

Pride begins with "I", leaving God behind and raising yourself up to take the glory that belongs to God alone.  Satan was cast down to the earth and judgement was brought to him.  The people of one language and one mind set against God's will, were also cast out.  God confuses their language causing them to disperse and fill the earth (like He originally commanded.)

We can learn a valuable lesson here:  No matter what you do to rebel against God, our Sovereign God will set out to do His will with or without your compliance.

Note:  In verse 7, "Come, let US" is Scripture reference to the trinity.  The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are together as one God from the beginning of creation.

Due to the sin of man, the people were dispersed with different languages.  You would think after the story of the flood being so near in history that they would have submitted to God's will.  But we will see over and over in Scripture that man's heart is wicked and we cannot save ourselves.  This is why God sends Himself, His only Son to save us from our sinfulness and break the power that sin has over us.
We know and believe that pride comes before a fall.  We see it over and over in Scripture, yet many many prideful people are thriving and well.  Job brought this complaint to the Lord.  Let's see what happens:
Recall the story of Job for a minute (short as I can):
Job is faithful to God.  God blesses Job tremendously.  Satan approaches God and challenges Jobs faithfulness, saying Job is only faithful because you give him everything.  So one by one Satan removes his wealth, family, and then health (only with God's permission).  He's sitting with friends who accuse him of sin, yet he is without.  He's complaining as to why God has done this to him, and amongst his complaints are why do the wicked prosper.  I think many have this question, many then, and many today.

God's response is so amazing that Job (who's talked for many many chapters by now) is speechless. God's response basically humbles Job to the point where he realizes his place.  God is the Creator, the master and Job is the creation, his faithful servant.  God answers Job with many questions. So do you know how this works, and this works? No.  Job is a mere man.  He doesn't have the answers.  God does.

It's like I tell Lilli, "Be responsible for you."  You aren't responsible for your proud neighbor, or proud boss. Let's learn from the lessons we tell our own children.  YOU do what is right.

Romans 14:11-12
"As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me,
And every tongue shall give praise to God."
So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.
Next week: Guess what!!? More genealogy :) hehe
I will answer on the next lesson.

Genesis 5

Remember that Adam and Eve had Seth to replace Abel, because Cain killed Abel, who is now a wanderer.  Adam was 130 years old when he and Eve had Seth.

People clearly lived until they were a lot older than we do today.

Study below the genealogy of Noah and his 3 sons, Ham, Shem and Japeth.

Here you have Noah and his 3 sons coming from the line of Seth.  We are NOT from the line of Cain.  Do not confuse the Lamech from the line of Cain and the Lamech who fathered Noah.  This Lamech is the one from the line of Seth (not Cain or Abel).  They used many of the same names, just as we do today.

Lamech could see the difficulties of the curse that Adam and Eve caused for them.  Lamech spoke over his son Noah (asking of God):
"He (Noah) will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed"

Check out how Lamech spoke over Noah!  He declared over his life.  He spoke over Noah saying that he would comfort God's people from the curse.  God must have revealed this to Lamech and Lamech spoke it over Noah.

The Lord has revealed specifics to me over my children.  I speak over my children every night before bed.  I ask that God would use them for His glory and keep them on the path towards Him.
Next week: We will study Genesis 6.  We will see how man has become so corrupt that God will flood the earth.  Stay tuned!

Genesis 6:1-8

When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose.

***Interjection****  This is a peculiar verse.  Theologists seems to think that sons of God were a species of giants.  Benson's commentary as giants:  "There were giants — Men so called partly for their high stature, but principally for their great strength and force, whereby they oppressed and tyrannized over others. For this is mentioned as another sin and cause of the flood." (biblehub.com)  With this line of thinking, they were probably from the line of Cain, a sinful generation.
Another conclusion of theologians is that the sons of God were demons.  God created all things, so we may conclude that the fallen angels were having sexual relations with the women.  This is likely in that the devil wanted to pollute the bloodline, as Christ was already declared to crush Satan.
Regardless of the details on this particular species, the Lord was angry, which brings us to the next verse.

Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not abide ina man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.”

***Interjection*** We can see today that men do not live to be 800 or 900 like we saw in the last lesson.  Thank you Pastor Kenneth for this revelation awhile back.  This is a portion of the judgement that God brings on mankind in the future.  Life span for mankind significantly decreases after the flood, and continues to decrease through Mose's time.  Psalm 90:10 even says that 70 or 80 years is a long life.  And so, we see that a long fulfilled life coming to Christ can be obtained in an average life span of 70-120 years at it's best.  If you google the oldest woman, you will get a little over 122 years.  My thought is that 120 years is like saying 70 years still containing a 78 year old.  Or the Lord is prophesying a general roundabout number.

4The Nephilimb were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

^^^ Reiterating Genesis 6:1 - Nephilim are the offspring of the sons of God and daughters of men.

5The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6And the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7So the LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.”

***Interjection*** All of mans thoughts were consistently evil is a bold statement as to the state of man at this time.  Sin was so ramped that the Lord regretted making man and He grieved in His heart.  We see the tenderness of a father to a child's rebellion. God was sorry He made man and His heart was saddened by the choices of mankind.  However, God is holy and just, therefore judgment must come.  He would wipe out every living creature on earth.

8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

And then there was grace.

What places the favor of God on you?

Faith.

Noah believed God.

Genesis 6:9 Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.

Believe God.  Walk with God.  Talk with God.
Next week: We will study Noah and God's plan for Noah to build the ark.  We will study the covenant that God made with Noah.

   Click the Correct Answer
Noah and his wife, 3 sons and wives - survived the flood
Shem, Ham, and Japheth
All humans come from Noah and his 3 sons
So all people come from Noah and his 3 sons.  The only definitively traceable people are those of the Jews. And this is because Jesus the Messiah came from the line of Shem, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and David (see Luke 3:23-38 for the genealogy of Jesus Christ).

Nimrod, the son of Cush (son of Ham) was a mighty hunter (self relying) and he ruled and conquered building many cities.  It is believed that the gene of giants before the flood arose in Nimrod.  His name means to rebel. The beginning of his kingdom was Babel.  Stay tuned for chapter 11 and we will see why people speak different languages. Nimrod and Babel are the first signs of man doing things on his own (after the flood) and using their own power and rejecting God.

Canaan was cursed by God, but it doesn't mean that they won't prosper here on earth.  The curse is within the soul as you could see the nature of Ham's heart and likely Canaan.  God cursed the whole line. Look carefully where the descendants of Ham settled; they settled in the land that God will promise to the Israelites.  Note Israel and Jerusalem highlighted in yellow on the map.  Also notice the many sons and tribes of Ham.

Don't we see this today?  The Promised Land will always be fought over.  In our current news the Syrians are dispersing because their land is being taken by force, by ISIS.  ISIS is an extreme muslim terrorist group that follow the most violent parts of the Quran.  Later when we get to Abraham and Sarah, we will see that muslims come from the son that Abraham tried to have on his own with the maidservant Hagar, and jews come from Isaac the promised son between Abraham and Sarah.  Hagar is from the line of Ham, as she was Egyptian. Abraham is from the line of Shem.

Evil may advance here on earth, but we as Christians hold an eternal inheritance.  Jesus will come from the line of Shem, and over the course of our studying the Old Testament, we will see the Israelites struggle with oppression and great opposition, but we will also see how a mighty God will pull them through.  They will be tested in their faith and God will fight for them.  Let us learn from the Israelites, what to do and not to do in our own life.  The Old Testament is full of rich text explaining our heritage and showing us what God is like.

Japheth - India and Europe - Gentiles

Ham - North Western Africa, western coast of the Arabian Peninsula, and the Fertile Crescent from Egypt to Mesopotamia
Shem - "The descendants of Shem are the Semitic peoples who inhabited the eastern lands: modern-day Iraq, Iran, and eastern Saudi Arabia. The genealogy of Shem split at the sons of Eber. From Eber we get the word “Hebrew.” The descendants of Eber’s son Joktan are given in 10:26-32, while the descendants of his other son, Peleg are found in
Genesis 11. It was Peleg’s line which led to Abraham and eventually to the Israelites (11:18-26).  This is the family that God will be dealing with throughout the entire Old Testament. These are the Hebrews, the nation Israel." (https://bible.org/seriespage/14-spread-nations-genesis-101-1126)
We are one big family!  If we can trace our ancestry all the way back to Noah and his wife, we should love our neighbor as ourself, as God tells us.
Next week: We will study Genesis 11, which talks about the tower of Babel and how God dispersed men and women giving them different languages.
I will answer on the next lesson.
